Exciting Summer Opportunities for Indian Creek Middle School Students
This summer, students from Indian Creek Middle School’s Sycamore Stars After School program had the opportunity to attend the ICMS Sycamore Stars Summer Camp. The camp offered an immersive experience with lessons in career preparation, literacy, math, music, teamwork, science, technology, and more! A special thanks to The Sycamore Youth Center for providing such enriching opportunities for students across the Ohio Valley to enjoy their summer.
Creek Competes
The Indian Creek baseball team captivated the hearts and minds of their community, school and the Ohio Valley baseball community, advancing to the OHSAA Baseball Championship Division II semifinals on June 7. Opponent West Branch rallied from behind to win 4-2.
“These guys absolutely proved they belonged here, they played so hard,” Indian Creek head coach Mike Cottis said. “I’m so proud of these boys. “They made Indian Creek nation proud and they were out in full force.”
Making Improvements to Kettlewell Stadium
Work has begun to add retaining walls, construct new sidewalks and make other improvements to Kettlewell Stadium! Our district has partnered once again with SoL Harris/Day, the architectural firm behind the construction and renovation of Indian Creek High School, Cross Creek Elementary School and Hills Elementary School. Grae-Con Construction of Wintersville is performing the work.
Hellbender Conservation Efforts at ICHS
Indian Creek High School’s partnerships with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Toledo and Columbus Zoos have given our students a role in preserving an endangered salamander species, the hellbender. After receiving an ODNR Aquatics Wildlife Education Grant, ICHS made a home for 3-year-old hellbender and school ambassador, Chief. Then with the addition of a new rearing room, Indian Creek High School also received 20 juvenile hellbenders. Our students are actively helping with hellbender conservation efforts by raising and eventually releasing these young hellbenders back into the wild. Indian Creek is the first high school to offer this unique CTE program!
Students & Community Unite to Create New Mural
Indian Creek High School and Jefferson County Christian School students and adults recently teamed up to create the new “Welcome to Wintersville” mural on the village’s west-end retaining wall. This project, launched by the Wintersville Council’s beautification committee, replaced an older, faded mural to bring fresh energy to the community! Great job!!
Indian Creek Programs Empower Students to Succeed
We know that every student is unique. Our goal is for every Creek student to graduate ready for enrollment in college, employment in a great career or enlistment in service to our country. That’s the motivation behind our Career Pathway Success Plans that students begin exploring as early as third grade.
Enrollment
For college bound students, Creek offers opportunities to earn credits while still in high school in College Credit Plus. ACT/SAT preparation and tutoring and other college admissions support is also provided.
Employment
This year, our Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs expanded, thanks to funding from the Ohio Career Technical Education Equipment Grant Program. Pathways now include Natural Resources, Performing Arts, Business, Engineering Design, Interactive Media and more!
Enlistment
Students who choose the enlistment path are able to ready themselves for military service, learning what options are available to them within their chosen branch of service and the skills required for that role.
Adam Lewis Appointed to Serve as New Treasurer
The Indian Creek Local School District has appointed Adam Lewis to succeed retiring treasurer Denise Todoroff. Effective January 1, 2025, Lewis will assume the role of treasurer/CFO following Todoroff’s retirement after 23 years of dedicated service. In preparation, Lewis will begin as assistant treasurer on September 1, 2024, working closely with Todoroff to ensure a smooth transition. Lewis, a Steubenville native with a background in accounting and educational finance, is eager to dive into his new position and our district is excited to welcome him!
Creek is a Healthy Worksite!
Earlier this year, the Indian Creek Local School District earned its second Ohio Healthy Worksite Award from the Healthy Business Council of Ohio (a division of the Ohio Department of Health). HBCO recognizes Ohio employers who demonstrate a commitment to employee wellness. This year, Indian Creek earned a Small Business Bronze Award for promoting health and wellness among students and staff.
“Most center around healthy food practices for staff and students, building environmental controls, health and exercise options for staff,” said district Assistant Superintendent John Belt. “This is the second year in a row that ICLSD has been recognized.”

ICHS Receives Grant for Career-Tech Education
Exciting things are happening at Creek! Indian Creek High School’s career-technical education program recently received a $150,000 grant through the Ohio Career Technical Education Equipment Grant Program that will help prepare our students for the changing technological landscape. The funding will be used to acquire two FANUC robotic arms to expand learning and earn credentials for students in the engineering design and programming career pathways. A student repair academy, known as the “Creek Squad,” is also being formed to assist in the district’s buildings and prepare students for the workforce.

Kara Bryan is Outstanding High School Teacher
Indian Creek High School
Our mission is to put children first – and it is reflected in our teachers across all grades. Creek is especially proud of Indian Creek High School educator Kara Bryan who has been recognized for her work in the classroom and received an Outstanding High School Teacher Award through the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS).
Principal Louie Retton congratulated Bryan and said she was an important asset to the school.
“Kara Bryan is an outstanding teacher. She is a leader among her colleagues as she leads multiple professional learning communities with her department and grade level intervention team,” Retton added. “Bryan is a student-centered teacher, she always puts the needs of her students first. Not only is Bryan a great teacher, she is an even better person. She is a great faculty member and approaches every day in the most positive way.”
Indian Creek Superintendent T.C. Chappelear said Bryan exemplified the spirit of an educator and the award was deserved.
“Kara has been a great teacher for Indian Creek. I believe the district is fortunate to have Kara and dedicated teachers like her in Indian Creek classrooms.”
